Program Overview
The Grant Writing Certificate Program provides an intensive opportunity to acquire the knowledge and practice the skills necessary to succeed in today’s competitive grant writing environment. Instructor Jack Smith is an accomplished grant writer with an easygoing style who packs each day with a vast amount of content and expertise. In addition, you’ll receive an extensive package of materials to use both during the week and for future grant writing projects. The Grant Writing Certificate Program is a hands-on workshop, not just a series of lectures. Class size is intentionally small in order to provide personalized attention while you build a real, usable work product.

You will be online for the entire time 8:00 AM – 3:30 PM each day and there is group work and out of class work. In addition to the lecture time, group work and out of class work, Jack will have an office hour each day to answer questions and provide individual consultation by appointment.

Grant writing techniques and processes are in a transitional stage. Grant Writers need to stay on top of the latest trends that include more online grant applications, requirements for better-designed evaluations and new social policies that determine grant opportunities. Participants that have completed our Grant Writing Certificate Program will have increased his/her chances of winning competitive grants through a better understanding of the entire grant process. A computer is required for 3 days of the program and familiarity with the personal computer environment is highly recommended as a prerequisite for this program.

Instructor
Jack Smith has over thirty years training and consulting experience with hundreds of nonprofit and public organizations throughout the US. His consulting experience is grounded by a decade of senior management experience with large multi-program nonprofits.
He currently teaches the grant writing certificate programs at the Austin Center for Nonprofit Studies, University of North Florida, Western Carolina University and the University of Maine. He regularly teaches for the San Antonio Area Foundation, Texas Municipal League and the University of New Hampshire.
In 2011 and 2012, he taught advanced grant writing programs to African public health officials in 2011 and 2012. The training programs were located in South Africa and Ethiopia and were sponsored by the African Society for Laboratory Medicine and the US CDC.
Past grant writing training clients have included the Cherokee Nation, NY Department of Housing and Community Renewal, Emory University, US Department of Education, Duke University and National Association of School Nurses.
Jack Smith has a Master of Public Administration degree from the University of Maine. His housing development work has received a national citation from the US Department of Energy.
